Castelo de Bemposta
Penamacor, Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Bemposta is a small medieval walled enclosure in the village of Bemposta, Penamacor municipality, Castelo Branco district, eastern Portugal's Beira Baixa region near the Spanish border.
Ordered by King Dinis between 1279-1325, it surrounded the settlement with a 352-meter perimeter of stone and limestone walls, two flanked gates, corbels, and a pre-existing well for water, mirroring defenses at Miranda do Douro.
Donated by João I in 1399 to Rui Gonçalves Alcoforado and later held by the Sampaio family, it declined after Manuel I's 1510 charter, with the rectangular stronghold and quadrangular tower—restored in the 20th century with a clock and third floor—remaining as Public Interest heritage amid Roman-era remnants.
