Castelo de Cabeço de Vide
Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Cabeço de Vide in Cabeço de Vide, Portugal, occupies a prehistoric hilltop site with Neolithic and Roman remains, conquered from the Moors by King Afonso Henriques in 1160 only to be retaken and destroyed in 1190 during Yaqub al-Mansur's offensive.
Rebuilt soon after on the current cabeço for strategic frontier defense, it featured a castle and encircling walls around the settlement, flourishing in the 16th century under Diogo de Azambuja's lordship with Queen Leonor's 1498 founding of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia and King Manuel I's 1512 charter.
Now reduced to scant ruins amid the Alentejo landscape, it reflects centuries of Reconquista struggles and regional importance.
