Castelo de Castro Marim in Castro Marim, Portugal, was captured from the Moors in 1242 by Paio Peres Correia during the Reconquista and rebuilt by King Afonso III in 1277 to defend the strategic Guadiana River frontier against Spanish and North African threats.
King Denis expanded it in 1279 with a new gate and barbican walls around the town, while later rulers like Manuel I in 1504 ordered repairs; it briefly housed the Order of Christ headquarters from 1319 until 1334.
Remodeled with bastions during the 1640 Restoration War and damaged by the 1755 earthquake, the double-walled ruins—featuring the "Old Castle" core and outer enclosure—now offer panoramic views as a preserved medieval landmark.
