Castelo de Chaves
Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Chaves is a medieval fortress dominating the historic city of Chaves in northern Portugal's Vila Real district, built atop Roman walls from the 1st century BC and first fortified in the 9th century by Count Odoarius under Alfonso III of León during the Reconquista. King Afonso III of Portugal granted it a charter in 1258, with the standout 28-meter quadrangular keep tower—featuring a cistern, barrel vaults, loopholes, balconies, battlements, and a royal coat of arms—completed under Dinis I and Afonso IV. Modernized with Vauban-style bastions during the 1640-1668 Restoration War, it now houses a military museum amid gardens offering valley views, classified as a National Monument since 1938.
