Castelo de Lanhoso
Póvoa de Lanhoso, Portugal, Portugal
The Castelo de Lanhoso crowns Monte do Pilar, Portugal's largest granite monolith at 385 meters, in Póvoa de Lanhoso near the Ave and Cávado river valleys.
Occupied since the Chalcolithic and featuring a Romanized castro, it was rebuilt between 1071-1091 by Archbishop D. Pedro of Braga over Roman foundations as an advanced defense for the episcopal seat, marked by Portugal's oldest castle epigraphic plaque.
With an irregular hexagonal Romanesque-Gothic layout, crenellated walls, a raised quadrangular keep with arrow slits, elliptical barbican, and cistern, it served as refuge for Countess Teresa, mother of Afonso Henriques, before strategic decline post-Reconquista; partially dismantled in 1680 to build the adjacent Sanctuary of Our Lady of Pilar, its ruins were classified a National Monument in 1910.
