Castelo de Leiria
Leiria, Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Leiria is a prominent medieval fortress in the city of Leiria, central Portugal, originally constructed by King Afonso Henriques in 1135 during the Reconquista to defend against Arab forces, with reinforcements added by Sancho I around 1195.
King Dinis significantly expanded it in 1324, building the Keep Tower (Torre de Menagem) and Royal Palace (Paços Reais), which includes a grand loggia offering panoramic city views, transforming it from a military stronghold into a royal residence frequented by him and Queen Isabel, linked to the Miracle of the Roses legend.
Its irregular polygonal layout features robust walls, towers, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena, and Gothic elements from 12th-15th century phases, with 20th-century restorations by architect Ernesto Korrodi preserving its palatial appearance. Today, it stands as a national monument and popular tourist site overlooking the city.
