Castelo de Longroiva
Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Longroiva is a medieval castle located in the village of Longroiva, Mêda municipality, Guarda district, in northeastern Portugal's Beira Interior region south of the Côa River.
Occupied since prehistoric times with possible Lusitanian, Roman (as Longóbriga), Visigothic, and Muslim fortifications, it was reconquered by Fernando I of León around 1055-1057 and donated by Afonso Henriques to the Knights Templar circa 1145, who under Mestre Gualdim Pais erected its prominent Romanesque-Gothic keep tower in 1176 as documented by an inscription.
Transferred to the Order of Christ after the Templars' suppression, it declined post-19th century when stones were quarried for local building and its interior became a cemetery, yet remains a classified National Monument since 1943 with a trapezoidal plan, degraded walls, cisterns, and panoramic views.
