Castelo de Marialva
Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Marialva stands as a striking medieval ruin atop a granite hill in the historic village of Marialva, Mêda municipality, Guarda district, northeastern Portugal, dominating the Côa River valley along the old Riba-Côa frontier near Spain.
Originating from Iron Age castro settlements later adapted by Romans, Visigoths, and Moors, it was conquered by Fernando I of León around 1063, integrated into Portugal by Afonso Henriques in 1179, rebuilt in stone under Sancho I early 13th century, and strengthened by Dinis from 1295 amid border tensions before the 1297 Treaty of Alcanices.
Its oval walled enclosure features four gates like Porta do Anjo da Guarda, three 14th-century quadrangular towers, a trapezoidal 13th-century keep, 16th-century cisterns, a Manueline pillory, and ruins of the Casa da Câmara, jail, and churches, classified a National Monument in 1957 after rediscovery efforts preserved this time-frozen fortress.
