Castelo de Mirandela
Mirandela, Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Mirandela is a medieval fortress in the historic city of Mirandela, Bragança district, northern Portugal's Trás-os-Montes region, strategically positioned on the São Miguel hilltop overlooking the Tua River.
Construction began late 13th century under King Dinis, following Afonso III's 1250 charter, featuring a walled enclosure with four gates—including the surviving Porta de Santo António with its broken-arch granite portal and vaulted interior—and a probable keep tower, once among the region's strongest defenses.
It supported John I during the 1383-1385 crisis, saw reinforcements until 1448, but declined post-Aljubarrota as border threats eased, with walls dismantled in the 19th century for urban development; today, remnants like the gate and integrated wall fragments hold Public Interest status since 1955.
