Castelo de Montemor-o-Novo
Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Montemor-o-Novo in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal, originated around 1203 following its charter from King Sancho I after reconquest from Moorish forces, possibly atop a Roman fort, with major fortifications under King Dinis from 1279 including village walls completed by 1365.
Held by Nuno Álvares Pereira in the Avis dynasty era, it hosted the 1495 Cortes where Manuel I decided on the India route, featuring gates like Vila (with Manueline arms), Bishop's/Angel's, and Santiago/Sol defended by towers such as Torre da Má Hora, alongside ruins of Paço dos Alcaides, churches of São João Baptista and Santa Maria do Bispo.
Reformed during the Restoration War and damaged by the 1755 earthquake, its ensemble of walls, towers, and medieval structures was classified a National Monument in 1951.
