Castelo de Numão
Seixas, Portugal, Portugal
The Castelo de Numão crowns a rocky hilltop in Numão, near Seixas in Vila Nova de Foz Côa municipality, Portugal, first referenced in 960 AD when noblewoman D. Flâmula donated it to Guimarães Monastery as part of early Christian defenses.
Retaken by Muslims around 1000, devastated in 1030, and reconquered by Fernando Magno in 1055-1056, it was granted a charter by Fernão Mendes de Bragança in 1130 under Afonso Henriques, with major walls and a keep tower rebuilt by Sancho I in 1189 amid Reconquista efforts.
King Dinis confirmed its defenses in 1285 during border conflicts, though it sided against João I in the 1383-1385 succession crisis before fading into modest ruin, preserving today a vast walled perimeter, six of fifteen original towers, Romanesque Santa Maria church, cistern, and nearby pre-Romanesque São Pedro chapel.
