Castelo de Óbidos in Óbidos, Portugal, traces its origins to Roman times as a possible castro later fortified by Moors, before King Afonso Henriques conquered it in 1148 during the Reconquista, sparking centuries of royal enhancements.

Expanded by kings like Sancho I with the Torre Albarrã, Afonso II with major upgrades, Dinis I adding his namesake tower as a wedding gift to Queen Isabel, and Fernando I completing the layout around 1375 with towers like D. Fernando's, it blends Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, and Baroque styles in a trapezoidal plan rising 79 meters above sea level, encircled by 1.5 km of crenellated walls with semi-circular and rectangular towers guarding the medieval village.

A frequent royal residence—site of King João I's 14th-century calendar reform—it suffered damage in sieges and the 1755 earthquake, but post-20th-century restorations transformed the Paço dos Alcaides into a pousada hotel while preserving it as a National Monument, famed for its wedding gift tradition to Portuguese queens.
