Castelo de Outeiro
Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Outeiro, also known as Fortaleza do Outeiro de Miranda, is a medieval castle atop a rocky hill at 812 meters elevation in Outeiro parish, Bragança municipality, northern Portugal's Trás-os-Montes, about 1 km east of the village and midway between Bragança and Vimioso.
With possible Roman origins, it was fortified under King Dinis around 1290 via royal charter to defend the eastern frontier, first documented in 1369 after Castilian attack damage, supporting Beatriz during the 1383-1385 crisis before John I's reconquest and 1414 rebuild.
Expanded with village walls by 1418 and shown in Duarte de Armas' 1509 sketches featuring a rectangular watchtower and keep, it declined after Manuel I relocated the town downhill, suffering Spanish assaults in the 1640-1668 Restoration War and 1762 before ruin.
Today, granite remnants form an irregular oval plan with thick walls, a full-arch gate, crumbling southern bulwark, and Public Interest status.
