Castelo de Pena de Aguiar (ruínas)
Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Pena de Aguiar, now in ruins, is a medieval rock fortress perched on granite cliffs overlooking the valley in Telões parish, Vila Pouca de Aguiar municipality, Vila Real district, northern Portugal.
Originating from a Roman military fort in the 1st century BC to guard routes amid gold and silver mines, it was rebuilt in the 12th-13th centuries likely under Sancho I as a key strategic site during the Reconquista, featuring Romanesque elements like two towers—a rectangular northern one and irregular southeast tower—linked by a semi-circular curtain wall atop prehistoric settlement layers.
Besieged by Leonese forces for supporting Afonso Henriques, it lost importance after Afonso III's 1255 foral to Telões, was abandoned by 1527 due to gunpowder warfare, and now preserves consolidated walls, arrowheads from battles, and nearby prehistoric village remains as a National Monument.
