Castelo de Penafiel de Bastuço
Tadim, Portugal, Portugal
The Castelo de Penafiel de Bastuço, perched on a rocky hilltop near Tadim in Braga municipality, Portugal, served as the administrative center of the Terra de Penafiel de Bastuço or Julgado de Penafiel from the late 11th century, one of over 20 Minho-Douro fortresses during the Reconquista.
First referenced in 1059 documents—possibly earlier—its trapezoidal granite structure featured square corner covels, perimeter taludes, intermediate slopes, a foundational ditch, and wall remnants, with medieval pottery and a 4th-century Roman coin found onsite amid strategic views over Roman roads and the Camba stream valley.
Donated by Afonso Henriques in 1128 to Archbishop Paio Mendes while under Count Henrique's prestige, it lost prominence post-13th century, now ruins classified as a Public Interest Site since 2016, inspiring local trails and legends.
