Castelo de Penalva ou Penedo dos Mouros
Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Penalva, also known as Penedo dos Mouros, is a ruined medieval fortress atop a prominent granite hill in the parish of Castelo de Penalva, Penalva do Castelo municipality, Viseu district, central-northern Portugal, between the Mondego and Dão rivers.
Conquered from the Moors in 1057 by King Fernando I of León, who destroyed it to prevent reuse, the site remained desolate until repopulation around 1191 under Portugal's emerging kingdom, serving as a strategic outpost during the Reconquista with ties to the former council seat shared later with Castendo by 1527.
Named from Latin "penna alba" for its white rock outcrop, no substantial remains survive today amid the area's historic parish of São Pedro de Penalva, referenced in 13th-century royal inquiries, now evoking faded defensive roles in regional history.
