Castelo de Penamacor - Torre de Menagem
Penamacor, Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Penamacor - Torre de Menagem is the sole surviving medieval keep of a 12th-century fortress in Penamacor, Castelo Branco district, eastern-central Portugal, built on a rocky promontory as part of the border defense line post-Reconquista, with King Sancho I granting its foral charter in 1209.
Attributed to Templar origins and expanded by King Dinis around 1300 with walls and the tower itself—depicted unfinished in Duarte d'Armas' 1509 Livro das Fortalezas—it features a square plan with three blind levels, a curved-lintel eastern portal at six meters accessed via external stairs, and Manueline royal arms.
Transformed in the 17th century during the Restoration Wars into a bastioned fort enveloping the village, the tower exploded as a powder magazine in 1739, leaving remnants like adjacent walls, Domus Municipalis, and 17th-century baluartes; classified a National Monument in 1973, it now houses an interpretation center with archaeological finds and a medieval burgo maquette.
