Castelo de Portel in Portel, Portugal, was founded in 1261 by nobleman D. João Peres de Aboim after receiving royal permission from King Afonso III to fortify the site amid Alentejo's frontier reconquest from Moorish forces, with construction resuming under King Dinis including town walls.

This Gothic heptagonal fortress, inspired by France's Château d'Angers, features circular corner towers, a dominant 25-meter square keep with rib-vaulted Gothic interiors including a lower prison level, multiple gates like the northern main entrance and southern Porta de Beja, a central cistern, and ruins of the Chapel of Saint Vincent plus the 16th-century Ducal Palace of Braganza built by Francisco de Arruda under Manuel I.

Enhanced by a Manueline barbican with bastions and royal arms, it transitioned from military stronghold to noble residence before partial decay, now preserved as a National Monument showcasing medieval defensive innovation.
