Castelo de Porto de Mós
Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Porto de Mós is a striking medieval castle in the Leiria district of central Portugal, with origins tracing back to a Roman watchtower later fortified by Muslims and conquered by Christian forces under King Afonso Henriques around 1148 during the Reconquista.
King Sancho I rebuilt and expanded it around 1200 amid ongoing threats, with further enhancements under King Dinis who granted the town its charter, transforming it into a key defensive outpost protecting Leiria and Coimbra. Its Gothic-Renaissance style shines through in the 15th-century renovations by D. Afonso, Count of Ourém, adding elegant green-tiled roofs, a grand keep, and palatial features after.
It housed troops before the pivotal 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota. Damaged by earthquakes in 1755 and 1909, it was classified a National Monument in 1910 and now stands as a well-preserved tourist gem open to visitors.
