Castelo de Ranhados
Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Ranhados is a ruined medieval castle atop a hill overlooking the village of the same name in Ranhados parish, Mêda municipality, Guarda district, northeastern Portugal, at the confluence of the Torto River and Teja stream.
Built in 1286 under King Dinis who granted a foral charter to repopulate and fortify the site—possibly atop a Lusitanian fort with Templar and Hospitaller aid—it was alternatively dated to 1381 when King Fernando I donated the village to the Távora brothers.
Referenced in 1504 Beira documents and receiving a Manueline foral in 1519, it declined post-18th century as village cemetery and quarry, now classified since 1977 as a Public Interest site with scant Gothic-era remnants.
