Verified Castelo de Ródão / Castelo do Rei Vamba

Portugal, Portugal

Castelo de Ródão, also called Castelo do Rei Vamba, is a medieval watchtower perched on a cliff overlooking the Tagus River at the dramatic Portas de Ródão in Vila Velha de Ródão, Castelo Branco district, central-eastern Portugal.

Traditionally linked to Visigothic King Wamba (r. 672–680) through romantic legends of tunnels, Moorish kings, and faithless queens, modern sources attribute its origins to a Muslim invasion-era lookout, tied to King Sancho I's 1199 donation of Açafa lands to the Knights Templar who likely built the 12th-13th century tower.

Primarily a strategic vigil over Tejo border incursions during the Reconquista, it evolved into an 18th-19th century artillery base blocking Alentejo invasions like the Seven Years' War and 1807 French incursion, with 19th-century reconstructions by the Marquis of Alorna, 2007 restorations, and nearby Nossa Senhora do Castelo chapel, now a classified public interest monument with free panoramic access.
