Verified Castelo de Santarém

Santarém Municipality, Portugal, Portugal

Castelo de Santarém is a historic hilltop fortress in Santarém Municipality, central Portugal, overlooking the Tagus River, with origins tracing back to an 8th-century BCE settlement later developed by Romans as Scalabis around 138 BCE, becoming a key hub under Julius Caesar.

Captured by Muslims in the 8th century and conquered during the 1147 Reconquista by King Afonso Henriques alongside Lisbon, it featured Romanesque-Gothic walls, an Alcáçova enclosure, seven gates like Porta de Santiago (remodeled in 1382 with ogival arches by King Ferdinand), towers such as Torre do Bufo and Torre das Cabaças, and additional defenses for Ribeira and Alfange neighborhoods.

King Dinis faced a 1324 revolt there, and it saw action in the 1383-1385 crisis, 17th-century Restoration War upgrades under John IV, and 1833-1834 Liberal Wars under Miguel, before the 1531 earthquake caused major damage and urban expansion integrated its remnants.

Today, surviving fragments include merlon-crowned turrets near Porta do Sol, wall sections, and a 1st-century BCE Roman temple podium uncovered in the 1990s, marking it as a layered heritage site.
