Sortelha, Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Sortelha is a well-preserved Romanesque castle in the hilltop village of Sortelha, Sabugal municipality, Guarda district, northeastern Portugal, perched at 760-786 meters overlooking Serra da Malcata amid granite boulders.
Likely originating from a pre-Roman castro Romanized in antiquity and rebuilt around 1220-1228 under Kings Sancho I and II during the Reconquista, it features an irregular oval enclosure with high granite walls, cruciform loopholes, two gates, a central square keep tower on the rocky massif, and a cistern, ranking as Beira Interior's oldest Romanesque fortress.
Expanded in the 14th century by King Dinis, adapted for artillery under Manuel I with the Varanda do Juiz balcony bearing royal arms, and restored in the 1940s, it endured border conflicts and now stands as a national monument within Portugal's Historic Villages.
