Its irregular pentagonal layout on a low hill features five curtain walls of exposed brick reinforced by cylindrical corner towers with pinnacles, crenellated battlements, arrow slits, and a prominent keep tower, blending late Gothic, Manueline, and Mudéjar styles after 16th-century renovations by architects like Diogo and Francisco de Arruda under Manuel I.

Repaired in 1490 under John II—who resided there during 1481-1482 Cortes—and later restored by national authorities from 1940 onward, it encloses the parochial Church of Nossa Senhora da Anunciação and Misericórdia Church, classified as a National Monument.
