Castelo de Vila do Touro
Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Vila do Touro is a ruined 13th-century medieval fortress in Vila do Touro village, Sabugal municipality, Guarda district, northeastern Portugal, strategically positioned above the Côa River and Ribeira do Boi confluence for frontier defense.
Commissioned around 1220 by Pedro Alvites, Templar Order master, after Guarda Council donated regional tithes conditional on its construction and foral charter granting, it formed a simple irregular polygonal enclosure of unfinished granite walls adapting to rocky terrain without towers, featuring a single southern Gothic pointed-arch gate.
Abandoned unfinished post-1297 Treaty of Alcanices shifting borders eastward and Templar dissolution in 1312—possibly destroyed by Guarda around 1290 fearing rivalry—plus later Restoration War redoubt use, scant northern/western wall fragments and rock game boards persist unclassified amid prehistoric roots.
