Castelo de Vila Nova de Cerveira
Vila Nova de Cerveira, Portugal, Portugal
The Castelo de Vila Nova de Cerveira is a medieval fortress in Vila Nova de Cerveira, Portugal, overlooking the Minho River near the Spanish border.
First mentioned in the 13th century as a simple defensive tower during King Sancho II's reign, it was expanded in the 14th century under King Dinis and further fortified with a barbican in the 1400s by Kings Fernando or João I.
King Afonso V granted it to Leonel de Lima in 1476 as reward for military service, while 16th-17th century upgrades, including walls, bastions, and a chapel to Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, addressed Spanish threats during the Restoration Wars, notably repelling Philip IV's forces in 1643.
Its oval Gothic plan features eight quadrangular towers, crenellated walls with a walkway, and integrated urban defenses like the São Miguel bastion, though 19th-century demolitions for development removed the keep and some gates, leading to partial restorations from 1905 onward.
