Castelo Melhor's Castle
Portugal, Portugal
The Castle of Castelo Melhor is a medieval ruin atop a hill in Castelo Melhor, Vila Nova de Foz Côa municipality, Portugal, exemplifying a secondary frontier fortress along the disputed Riba-Côa line.
Built by Leonese King Afonso VII around 1209-1210 with a charter to foster settlement, its circular granite-schist walls enclosed a 12th-13th century village later abandoned for lower ground.
Ceded to Portugal via the 1297 Treaty of Alcanices, King Dinis reinforced it modestly while granting new administration, followed by repairs under Fernando I, João I, and Afonso V; donated to the Cabral family mid-15th century, it declined into a peripheral role, noted with few residents by 1527 and persisting as ruins today.
