Castelul Contelui de Mercy
Carani, Romania, Romania
Castelul Contelui de Mercy in Carani, Timiș County, Romania, was built between 1733 and 1734 by Italian and Spanish colonists under Habsburg governor Claudius Florimund Mercy, one of Banat's oldest structures and a listed historical monument (LMI TM-II-m-A-06192).
Named after Mercy who founded the village as Mercydorf in 1717 to advance viticulture, rice, and silkworms, it served as his secondary residence alongside his Timișoara palace amid regional colonization efforts.
Changing hands from János Saurau in 1780 to Spanish Lo Presti de Fontana D’Angioli until 1870 and János Barinyai until 1874, it was nationalized post-1948 as a CAP headquarters before falling into ruin despite preservation attempts.
