Castelul Károlyi
Romania, Romania
Castelul Károlyi in Carei, Satu Mare County, Romania, began as a 15th-century fortress built by the Károlyi noble family, fortified in the 16th-17th centuries with bastions and moats against Turkish invasions, and hosted key diplomatic events like the 1711 Peace Treaty of Satu Mare negotiations.
Transformed into a Baroque residence in 1794 by designs from Joseph Bitthauser, it evolved further in 1894-1896 under architect Arthur Meinig into its current Gothic Revival style with eclectic towers, an English park arboretum, and opulent interiors featuring frescoes and period furnishings.
Recently restored after years as a ruin, this "Transylvanian Peleș" now functions as a museum showcasing the family's legacy, drawing visitors to its grand halls and gardens.
