Castelul Lónyai
Medieșu Aurit, Romania, Romania
Castelul Lónyai in Medieșu Aurit, Romania, is a Renaissance castle rebuilt from 1620-1657 by nobleman Sigismund Lónyai on the site of a 13th-century fortress previously held by families like Kaplony and Báthory, designed as a square-plan residence with corner defense towers, luxurious frescoed interiors, and classical stone frames around doors and windows.
It endured sieges like the 1661 Ottoman assault during conflicts involving owner Anna Lónyai and Prince János Kemény, but suffered destruction in 1670 for her anti-Habsburg actions, further damage in the 1707 Rákóczi uprising fire, and later reconstructions by Wesselényi and others before becoming a military hospital in 1940 and burning in 1944-1945.
Today, its dramatic ruins stand as a testament to Transylvania's turbulent noble history, drawing visitors to this Satu Mare County site despite preservation struggles.
