Castillo San Felipe del Morro
San Juan, Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico
Castillo San Felipe del Morro, commonly called El Morro, is a large Spanish-era fortress in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, sitting on a rocky promontory at the entrance of San Juan Bay.
Built starting in 1539 and expanded over more than 200 years, it was designed as a six‑level coastal fort to defend the city from enemy ships and attacks from the sea. The thick stone walls, gun emplacements, and watchtowers reflect classic Spanish military architecture and helped make it one of the most feared colonial fortresses in the Caribbean.
Today it is part of the San Juan National Historic Site, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and serves as a popular open‑air museum where visitors can walk the ramparts and enjoy sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and the city skyline.
