Castle Bragança
Bragança, Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Bragança is one of Portugal's best-preserved medieval fortresses, located in the historic center of Bragança, in the northern Trás-os-Montes region near the Spanish border. Built in the 13th century under King Sancho I on a hill at 700 meters elevation, it features an oval-shaped crenellated wall perimeter of 660 meters reinforced by 15 towers, thick granite walls averaging 2 meters, and a massive 34-meter square keep tower with Gothic elements like mullioned windows, machicolations, battlements, and bartizans. Expanded in the 15th century under the House of Bragança, it encloses key sites like the Romanesque Domus Municipalis, Santa Maria Church, and pillory, serving as a military museum today and classified as a National Monument.
