Castle Idanha-a-Nova
Idanha-A-Nova, Portugal, Portugal
Castle Idanha-a-Nova is a medieval fortress in Idanha-a-Nova, Castelo Branco district, east-central Portugal, built around 1187 by Knights Templar master Gualdim Pais on a Ponsul River escarpment to defend the Beira frontier during the Reconquista.
Its oval plan with upright walls mirrors contemporary Templar designs like Monsanto and Tomar, later reinforced with a barbican in the 15th century and integrated with the parish church by the early 16th, when Duarte d'Armas documented it as well-preserved.
King Sancho I granted a foral charter in 1201 for repopulation, and Manuel I issued a new one in 1510 recognizing its growth over nearby Idanha-a-Velha, though ruins now form a viewpoint with scant remnants after centuries of decline.
