Castle Melgaço
Vila, Portugal, Portugal
The Castle of Melgaço in Vila, Portugal, overlooks the Minho River near the Spanish border as a key Romanesque fortress founded around 1170 by King Afonso Henriques, who simultaneously granted the town a charter to promote settlement and defense against Galician incursions.
King Afonso III expanded it significantly after 1258 with a second charter, initiating major works from 1245-1263—including a rare circular layout, prismatic battlements, three towers (one pentagonal), two gates, and a robust square keep rebuilt with three floors, narrow slits, and a crenellated balcony now serving as a museum viewpoint.
Further Gothic reforms and 17th-century bastions reinforced it during the Restoration Wars, though it declined post-19th century before modern restorations preserved it as a National Monument symbolizing northern frontier authority.
