Castle Monforte de Rio Livre
Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Monforte de Rio Livre is a medieval fortress in the parish of Águas Frias, Chaves municipality, Vila Real district, northern Portugal, built on a prehistoric hillfort site with nearby Roman settlement traces overlooking the Águas Livres stream. Ordered by King Afonso III with a 1273 charter elevating it as a northern frontier stronghold, construction finished in 1312 under Dinis I, featuring a rare rectangular plan, solid granite walls, three towers, a laterally attached southern keep, and later additions like a barbican, ditch, and 17th-century half-bastion for artillery during the Restoration War. It changed sides in the 1383-1385 crisis before John I's reconquest, declined after the 18th century as the village relocated, and now stands in ruins as a National Monument since 1950.
