Castle of Alcanede
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Alcanede is a ruined medieval fortress in the village of Alcanede, Santarém district, central Portugal, originally a pre-Roman castro expanded by Romans around 138 B.C. and later occupied by Moors.
Conquered by Count Henrique in 1091 and definitively by King Afonso Henriques around 1147 during the Reconquista campaigns near Santarém and Lisbon, it was donated to Gonçalo Mendes de Sousa before 1163 for rebuilding and donated by Sancho I to the Order of Calatrava in 1187, later passing to the Order of Aviz by 1318 with additions like a merlon-crowned keep tower.
Remodeled under Ferdinand in 1370 amid regional defenses, it lost military relevance after a devastating 1531 earthquake reduced it to fragments of walls, with minimal 20th-century interest despite its 1936 ruins discovery. Today, scant remnants perch on a limestone hill offering views, classified for heritage protection but largely abandoned.
