Castle of Amieira do Tejo
Amieira do Tejo, Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Amieira do Tejo in Amieira do Tejo, Portugal, was constructed around 1350 by Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira for the Knights Hospitaller, forming part of the Tagus River's defensive line against invasions after lands were donated in 1232 by King Sancho II.
This Gothic quadrilateral fortress with four towers, dressed granite walls, and a central courtyard for troops protected pilgrims and locals, later modernized under Kings John II and Manuel I for artillery and used as a prison.
Its sole major conflict came in 1440 during a succession crisis, when it surrendered without fight; post-17th century, it declined into residences, a graveyard until 1940, and was restored as a National Monument in 1922.
