Castle of Arnóia
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Arnóia, also called Moorish Castle or Moreira Castle, is a Romanesque medieval fortress on a rocky massif overlooking the town of Arnóia in Celorico de Basto municipality, Braga district, northern Portugal.
Dating to the late 10th or early 11th century for defense of the nearby Monastery of São Bento de Arnóia, it features a prominent square keep tower, quadrangular turret, single gate, and cistern, with archaeological traces of 14th-16th century occupation amid regional encastelamento.
Once central to the municipal seat with town hall and pillory, it declined after 1717 when elites relocated to Britelo, becoming Celorico de Basto, and was classified a National Monument in 1946.
