Castle of Arraiolos
Arraiolos, Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Arraiolos in Arraiolos, Portugal, is a rare circular medieval fortress built between 1306 and 1310 under King D. Dinis I on a conical hilltop, featuring thick elliptical walls, two main gates, and the standout Paço dos Alcaides with its imposing quadrangular keep tower divided into four floors.
Ordered after the town's 1290 charter and designed by João Simão with funding from the king, it enclosed the original settlement including the ancient Igreja Matriz do Salvador, later rebuilt, and served as a key defense in the Alentejo during crises like the 1383-1385 succession war.
Restored under João II with his coat of arms on the keep and featuring a 16th-century Clock Tower added by D. Manuel I, the well-preserved national monument blends Romanesque and Gothic styles amid ruins of guard quarters and a place-of-arms, offering visitors panoramic plains views and a glimpse into royal frontier architecture.
