Castle of Avis
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Avis in Avis, Portugal, was constructed starting around 1211-1214 after King Afonso II donated the lands to the Knights of Évora (later Order of Avis) under Master D. Fernão Anes, who built the initial castle and walls to secure the frontier post-Moorish conquest.
Expanded by 1336 under Master D. Lourenço Afonso with a prominent keep tower bearing inscriptions of its founding, it featured six gates, five towers including those of São Roque and Santo António, and served as a key stronghold integrated with local defenses like Alter do Chão.
Gradually dismantled from the 15th-19th centuries for materials—towers razed, gates repurposed, and walls eroded—it survives today as a classified monument with three towers, vaulted halls, and historical plaques amid conventual ruins atop a strategic hill overlooking valleys.
