Castle of Avô
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Avô is a ruined medieval fortress in the village of Avô, Oliveira do Hospital municipality, Coimbra district, central Portugal, perched on a hill overlooking the Alva River at its confluence with the Ribeira de Moura.
Ordered built by King Afonso Henriques in the 12th century after donation by Count Henrique to Coimbra's bishop, it was destroyed in 13th-century civil wars between Sancho II and Afonso III, then rebuilt by King Dinis in the 14th century with Gothic features like an irregular oval polygonal enclosure and ogive main gate.
By 1856, rapid decay led to stone reuse for local works like a bridge, leaving scant curtain walls with polygonal merlons around a 3.5m-high by 2.7m-wide arched entrance and the adjacent single-nave Chapel of São Miguel with vaulted presbytery. Classified as a Public Interest Building, its remnants now offer a scenic historical vantage amid the riverside setting.
