Castle of Belver
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Belver in Belver, Portugal, was the first fortress built by the Knights Hospitaller in the country, constructed between 1194 and 1212 after King Sancho I donated the Tagus River's northern bank lands—known as Guidintesta—to their prior Afonso Paes, strategically overlooking the river near the Zêzere confluence to defend against Almohad invasions during the Reconquista.
This Romanesque stronghold features an oval crenellated wall adapted to the hilltop terrain, a central rectangular keep with three floors accessed by a raised door and mobile staircase, sturdy battlements, and a later 16th-century Chapel of São Brás dedicated to John the Baptist.
Expanded by King John I amid Castilian conflicts, it integrated into the Tagus defensive line with sites like Almourol, served toll and patrol roles without blocking river traffic, and remains well-preserved as a National Monument despite gradual decline post-Middle Ages.
