Castle of Borba
Borba, Portuga, Portugal
Castle of Borba in Borba, Portugal, was constructed after its reconquest from the Moors in 1217 by King Afonso II, who donated the lands to the Order of Avis for defense and settlement along the contested Castile border.
King Dinis secured Portuguese possession via the 1297 Treaty of Alcanices, granted a charter in 1302 ordering fortified walls, and integrated it into the strategic frontier line visible toward Spain. Retaining strategic roles through the Restoration War—including the 1665 Battle of Montes Claros nearby—the medieval walls were absorbed into urban homes by the 19th century and classified as a Public Interest site in 1957.
