Castle of Castelo Bom
Portugal, Portugal
Castelo Bom is a ruined medieval castle in the village of Castelo Bom, Almeida municipality, Guarda district, northeastern Portugal near the Spanish border along the Côa River valley.
Built in the 12th century as an advance guard in disputed lands between Portugal and León, it was conquered by King D. Dinis in 1282 who reinforced it and granted a foral charter in 1296, fully integrating it into Portugal via the 1297 Treaty of Alcanices.
Expanded with walls and cisterns like Poço d’El Rei through the 14th-17th centuries for artillery defense during Restoration Wars, it declined after 1762 Spanish siege, 1810 French destruction, and 1834 municipal extinction, surviving as scattered walls and towers classified as public interest.
