Castle of Evoramonte in Evoramonte, Portugal, began construction around 1306 under King Dinis who fortified the medieval village atop Serra d’Ossa after its 1248 charter, originally reconquered from the Moors in the 12th century by Geraldo the Fearless.
Rebuilt post-1531 Lisbon earthquake in Manueline and Renaissance styles by architects Diogo and Francisco de Arruda for the Dukes of Braganza, it features a rectangular fortified palace with four integrated cylindrical towers, chamfered base widening upward, cannon emplacements, sculpted cornices, vaulted interiors on columns, and a cistern amid encircling walls.
Site of the 1834 Concession of Evoramonte ending the Liberal Wars between Liberals under Maria II and Miguelists, it was classified a National Monument in 1910 and preserves its bellicose Gothic silhouette overlooking Alentejo plains.
