Castle of Folgosinho
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Folgosinho is a small, circular medieval-style fortress overlooking the village of Folgosinho in the Guarda district of central Portugal, perched at 933 meters on the Serra da Estrela slopes.
Likely built in 1183 over pre-Roman Lusitanian castro ruins under orders from King Sancho I during the Reconquista, it supported regional repopulation efforts, with the town receiving charters from Sancho I in 1187, Afonso II in 1217, and Manuel I in 1512.
Its debated origins feature a 10-meter-diameter enclosure of white-pink quartz walls, a square eastern keep tower, three cylindrical bartizan guard towers, and a western gate, forming a defensive triangle with nearby Linhares and Celorico da Beira castles.
Classified as a Public Interest Building in 1936 and rebuilt in the 1930s-1940s, it now serves as a scenic viewpoint rather than a military site.
