Castle of Huniade
Timișoara, Romania, Romania
Huniade Castle in Timișoara, Romania, is the city's oldest surviving structure, originally built between 1308 and 1315 by King Charles I of Hungary as a royal residence amid political instability.
Rebuilt in 1443-1447 by John Hunyadi after a devastating earthquake, it featured semicircular towers for cannon defense and served as his base against Ottoman threats until his death in 1456. Repeatedly damaged by Ottoman sieges in 1552, Habsburg assaults in 1716, and the 1848-1849 revolution, it was reconstructed in neo-Gothic style by 1856 as an arsenal before becoming the Banat Museum in the 20th century.
