Castle of Lindoso
Portugal, Portugal
The Castle of Lindoso stands as a strategic border fortress in Lindoso, Portugal, near the Spanish frontier in Peneda-Gerês National Park, constructed from scratch in the 13th century during King Afonso III's reign to bolster defenses along the Lima River line, as evidenced by its absence in 1220 records but presence in 1258 inquiries and the monarch's coat of arms on the main gate.
Restored by Dinis around 1278 and pivotal in the 17th-century Restoration Wars—serving as a base for incursions into Galicia, briefly lost to Spanish forces in 1663, and modernized with star-shaped bastioned walls, ravelin (dated 1720), drawbridge, and artillery embrasures by 1666—it ceased military use in 1895 and was classified a National Monument in 1910, with 1940s restorations preserving its cistern, governor's quarters, and robust granite structure amid adjacent espigueiros granaries.
