Castle of Lousã
Lousã, Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Lousã, also known as Arouce Castle, in Lousã, Portugal, was constructed in the late 11th century as part of early defensive lines to protect Coimbra's southern access routes during the Reconquista, with Count Sisnando Davides occupying the site around 1080 before Moorish reoccupation.
King Afonso Henriques granted it a charter in 1151 to promote settlement, while expansions in the 12th-14th centuries added a northern keep tower and irregular hexagonal granite-shale walls topped by chamfered merlons.
Classified as a National Monument, its small courtyard, elbow-shaped southeast entrance flanked by semi-cylindrical turrets, and three additional corbels evoke medieval frontier warfare amid scenic schist landscapes.
