Castle of Messejana
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Messejana in Messejana, Portugal, likely originated as a Moorish structure from the Islamic occupation—its name deriving from the Arabic "masjana" meaning prison—with evidence of silver coins from the Ibn Wazir period unearthed in 1992 excavations.
Sacked in 1235 during the Reconquista under King Sancho II and rebuilt in 1288 by Pero Soudo during King Dinis's reign, it was donated to the Order of Santiago to secure the Alentejo frontier, featuring a rectangular layout with three encircling wall lines on a rural hilltop near the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios.
Abandoned by the 16th century after donation to D. João da Silva, it fell into ruin as locals quarried its schist and sandstone for building, leaving mainly a ruined tower and terraces amid prehistoric, Roman, and medieval layers.
